Wipe or Shred: How to Decide What Happens to a Retired Drive

Every hardware refresh forces the same fork in the road, and most organisations resolve it by habit rather than by reasoning. Confidence in a wipe is lower than it is for a spinning disk, and verification is harder.

Cost is a real factor as well. Certain specialised erasure software is expensive enough that for a one-off batch of drives it costs more than the hardware is worth. Shredding is faster and cheaper at volume.
